Percentage formulas
| Question | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What is P% of X? | P ÷ 100 × X | 15% of 200 = 30 |
| X is what percent of Y? | X ÷ Y × 100 | 30 of 200 = 15% |
| Percentage change from A to B | (B − A) ÷ A × 100 | 80 → 100 = 25% increase |
| X increased by P% | X × (1 + P ÷ 100) | 200 + 10% = 220 |
| X is P% of what? | X ÷ (P ÷ 100) | 30 is 15% of 200 |
| Price after P% off | Price × (1 − P ÷ 100) | 2,000 − 20% = 1,600 |
| Value before a P% increase | Value ÷ (1 + P ÷ 100) | 118 before 18% = 100 |
| Marks percentage | Marks obtained ÷ Total marks × 100 | 450 of 500 = 90% |
Percentage change is not symmetric
Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, but going back from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease — the change is always measured against the starting value. That is also why a 50% loss needs a 100% gain to recover. When neither number is the “start”, use the percentage difference, which measures the gap against their average.
