UTM Builder

Tag your links so Google Analytics shows exactly which post, message or ad brought each visitor — with clean, consistent values, the GA4 channel it will count as, and links for several channels at once.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Adds utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and optionally utm_id, utm_term and utm_content to any page URL — keeping its other parameters and #fragment.
  • One-click presets for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Google Ads, Meta ads, email, SMS, push notifications and QR codes.
  • Shows which GA4 default channel the link will most likely count as — Organic Social, Paid Search, Email and so on — using Google’s published rules.
  • Keeps values consistent: lowercase and underscores by default, because GA4 treats “Facebook” and “facebook” as different sources.
  • Warns about missing values, capital letters and short links, and reads the UTM tags back out of any link you paste.
  • Builds a separate link for several channels at once (copy all or download CSV), and hands any link to the QR Code Generator for posters and packaging.

Step by step

How to build a UTM link

  1. 1

    Paste the page URL

Enter the address of the page the link should open, such as your sale page.

  2. 2

    Pick a preset

Click WhatsApp, Instagram post, Google Ads or another preset to fill in source and medium.

  3. 3

    Name the campaign

Enter a campaign name like diwali_sale_2026, and optionally content such as story_1.

  4. 4

    Copy and share

Copy the link, open it to test, or make a QR code. Check the GA4 channel shown below it.

Tips for clean campaign data

Stick to one naming style. Decide on lowercase with underscores and use it everywhere — “Instagram”, “instagram” and “IG” become three separate sources in GA4. Use the medium names GA4 recognises (social, cpc, email, sms, referral, affiliate, display) so visits land in the right channel instead of “Unassigned”.

Never tag internal links. Links from one page of your site to another should not have UTM tags: clicking one starts a new session and overwrites where the visitor really came from. Google Ads links are tagged automatically (gclid) when auto-tagging is on, so they don’t need manual UTMs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a UTM link?

A normal link with extra parameters, such as ?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=diwali_sale, that tell Google Analytics where a visitor came from. The page itself works exactly the same.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source is the essential one — Google Analytics ignores the others without it. Always add utm_medium and utm_campaign too, so the visit is grouped into a channel and campaign.

What UTM should I use for WhatsApp?

utm_source=whatsapp and utm_medium=social, which GA4 groups as Organic Social. Add utm_content to tell apart a status update, a broadcast list and a group message.

Why does my traffic show as “Unassigned” in GA4?

The source and medium didn’t match any of GA4’s default channel rules — for example a made-up medium like “post” or “story”. Use standard mediums such as social, email or cpc. The tool shows the channel before you share.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes. GA4 treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources, so keep “Lowercase” switched on.

Do UTM tags affect SEO?

Not when used on links in campaigns, ads, emails and social posts. Don’t use them on your own internal links, and make sure pages have a canonical URL so tagged links aren’t indexed separately.
