RD formula

Each instalment earns compound interest from the month it is deposited until maturity. With quarterly compounding the maturity value is M = R × [(1 + i)ⁿ − 1] ÷ [1 − (1 + i)^(−1/3)], where R is the monthly deposit, i the quarterly rate (yearly rate ÷ 400) and n the number of quarters.

For example, ₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 7% gives about ₹3.60 lakh: ₹3,00,000 of deposits and roughly ₹60,000 of interest. Early instalments earn the most because they stay invested longest.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is RD interest calculated?

Banks compound RD interest every quarter. Each monthly instalment earns interest for the time it stays in the account, and the maturity value is the sum of all of them — this calculator uses that standard formula.

How much will I get for ₹1,000 a month for 1 year?

At 8% a year you deposit ₹12,000 and receive about ₹12,529 — ₹529 of interest. Change the rate to match your bank.

Does this work for a post office RD?

Yes. The post office RD runs for 5 years with quarterly compounding — choose 5 years and enter the current post office rate.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

Banks charge a small penalty for late instalments and may close the account after several misses, which reduces the maturity amount. The calculator assumes every instalment is paid on time.

Is RD interest taxable?

Yes. It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and the bank deducts 10% TDS when your interest with it crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens).

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
