2048 Game

Slide the tiles, join equal numbers and reach 2048 — with smooth animations, undo, a hint from a strong AI, boards from 3×3 to 6×6 and your best scores kept.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • The classic 2048 rules: slide all tiles up, down, left or right; two equal tiles that meet join into one, and a new 2 (or sometimes 4) appears after each move.
  • Play with swipes on a phone or the arrow keys / W A S D on a keyboard, with smooth sliding and merging animations.
  • Undo up to 50 moves, and a hint from an expectimax AI that usually reaches 2048 on its own.
  • Let the AI play to watch the strategy — games where it plays don’t count towards your best score.
  • Boards from 3×3 to 6×6, with the goal scaled to the size (256 on 3×3, 2048 on 4×4, 4096 on 5×5, 8192 on 6×6).
  • Your game, best score and top tile for each size are saved in your browser.

Step by step

How to play 2048

  1. 1

    Slide the tiles

Swipe, or press an arrow key, to move every tile as far as it can go.

  2. 2

    Join equal numbers

    Two tiles with the same number merge into their sum: 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8…

  3. 3

    Plan ahead

Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build the row next to it in order.

  4. 4

    Reach 2048

Make a 2048 tile to win — or keep going for a higher score. The game ends when no move is left.

Strategy that works

  • Pick a corner for your biggest tile and keep it there — mostly use two directions (say left and down) and a third only when needed.
  • Keep the edge row in order, largest to smallest away from the corner, so tiles can chain into each other.
  • Avoid the fourth direction: pressing it pulls the big tile out of its corner and lets a small tile land behind it.
  • Think about where the new tile will appear — leave space on the side away from your corner.

Scoring

Each merge adds the new tile’s value to your score: joining two 8s gives 16 points. Reaching 2048 usually means a score of about 20,000.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 2048 free to play here?

Yes — unlimited games with undo, hints and every board size, with no sign-up or download.

How do I play on a phone?

Swipe up, down, left or right on the board. The page won’t scroll while you swipe on it.

What happens after 2048?

Choose Keep going to continue for 4096, 8192 and beyond, or start a new game.

How does the AI hint work?

It tries each move and averages over where the next tile could appear, a few moves ahead (expectimax), favouring boards with empty cells, merges and tiles in order.

Does undo affect my best score?

No — undo is part of this version of the game. Only games where the AI played for you are left out of your best score.

Is my game saved?

Yes, in this browser, along with your best score and top tile for each board size.
