Word Guess
Guess the hidden word in six tries — green for the right spot, yellow for the wrong one. Play as many words as you like, or the word of the day.
At a glance
- Guess the hidden word in six tries. After each guess, letters turn green (right letter, right spot), yellow (in the word, wrong spot) or grey (not in the word).
- Unlimited play — a new word whenever you want — plus a daily word that is the same for everyone, in 4, 5 or 6 letters.
- Answers are everyday words: about 1,900 common five-letter words (and 1,400 four- and 2,500 six-letter ones), while any of 8,636 valid five-letter words is accepted as a guess. Rude words are never answers.
- Hard mode makes you use every letter you’ve found; high-contrast colours (orange and blue) help with colour vision deficiency.
- Share a spoiler-free grid of coloured squares, follow your streak and guess distribution, and tap the answer to look up its meaning.
- Type on your keyboard or tap the on-screen keys. Your game in progress and stats are saved on this device. Free, no sign-up.
Step by step
How to play Word Guess
- 1
Type a word
Enter any real word of the right length and press Enter.
- 2
Read the colours
Green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word at all.
- 3
Narrow it down
Use what you learn: keep green letters where they are, move yellow ones, and avoid grey ones. The keyboard keeps track for you.
- 4
Solve within six
Find the word in six guesses or fewer to win and keep your streak going.
- 5
Play again
Press Next word for another, or switch to the daily word.

A word a day
The daily word is the same for everyone and comes round once a day, at local midnight.
Short or long
Four letters for a quick game, five for the classic, six for a real stretch.
Hard mode
Every green and yellow letter must be used again — no throwaway guesses.
Share without spoilers
Copy your grid of coloured squares to show how you did, without giving the word away.
Kind to every eye
High-contrast colours, a big keyboard, and screen-reader announcements of each result.
Repeated letters
A letter is coloured only as many times as it appears in the answer. If you guess GEESE and the answer is THOSE, only the final E turns green — the other two Es are grey, because THOSE has just one E. Exact matches are coloured first, then letters in the wrong spot from left to right.
Tips for solving in fewer guesses
- Start with common letters. Words with E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N give you the most information.
- Use new letters early. On your second guess, try mostly letters you haven’t used yet, even if you suspect a word.
- Remember repeated letters. Words like LEVEL, GEESE or APPLE trip people up — the answer can repeat a letter.
- Think about word endings. -ER, -LY, -ED and -ING patterns (in six letters) narrow things fast.
- Save hard mode for later. Normal mode lets you spend a guess on testing letters.
Word list credits
Accepted guesses come from the public-domain ENABLE word list. Answers were chosen from the common-word levels of the English Speller Database (SCOWL), which draws on Alan Beale’s public-domain 12dicts lists, and then checked to leave out rude and offensive words.
