Webcam Tester

See yourself as your camera sees you. Check that the webcam works, what resolution and frame rate it really delivers, and how the lighting looks — before the call starts.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Tests a webcam in your browser: press the button, allow access, and the live picture appears with its resolution and frame rate.
  • Reports the real resolution (for example 1920 × 1080, Full HD), megapixels, aspect ratio and the frames per second actually arriving — measured, not just what the camera claims.
  • Asks the camera for its best mode, so a Full HD webcam is not tested at the 640 × 480 that browsers often start with.
  • Judges the lighting — too dark, well lit or washed out — and warns when the picture is black because of a lens cover.
  • Takes a photo (PNG at full resolution) and records a clip of up to 30 seconds to play back and download.
  • Lets you choose between cameras, try each standard resolution, mirror the preview, show grid lines and go full screen.
  • The picture stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

True resolution and FPS

What the camera delivers right now, with a plain rating for video calls.

Lighting check

Brightness is measured from the picture, with a tip when it is too dark or too bright.

Photo and video

Take a full-resolution snapshot or record a short clip, and download either.

Switch between built-in, USB and phone front and back cameras.

Webcam resolutions

The resolution is the number of pixels in each frame. More pixels give a sharper picture, as long as there is enough light.

What is good enough for video calls?

  • Full HD (1080p) at 24 fps or more — excellent. More than a call needs; right for streaming and recording.
  • HD (720p) at 20 fps or more — good. What most video calls actually send.
  • 480p — basic. Fine on a phone-sized window, soft on a large screen.
  • Below 12 frames a second the picture looks jerky. Low frame rates are usually caused by poor light: the camera slows down to gather more of it.

Webcam not working? Check these

  • Permission — click the icon at the left of the address bar and set Camera to Allow, then try again.
  • Privacy shutter — many laptops have a sliding cover over the lens or a camera key (often F8 or F10). A black picture usually means it is closed.
  • Another app — only one app can use most cameras at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Meet or the Camera app.
  • Privacy settings — in Windows and macOS, switch on camera access for your browser under Privacy & security → Camera.
  • The right camera — choose the camera you want from the list; a virtual camera from another program may have been picked.
  • The cable — for a USB webcam, unplug it and plug it into another port, directly rather than through a hub.

Look better on camera

  • Face the light. A window or lamp in front of you beats one behind you.
  • Raise the camera to eye level and sit an arm’s length away.
  • Wipe the lens — a fingerprint makes the whole picture hazy.
  • Use the grid: put your eyes on the upper line.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my webcam?

Press Test my webcam and allow access when the browser asks. If you see yourself, the camera works; the page also shows its resolution, frame rate and how well lit the picture is.

Why is my webcam showing a black screen?

Usually the lens is covered by a privacy shutter, the camera is switched off with a keyboard key, or another app is using it. The test warns you when the picture is completely black.

How do I check my webcam’s resolution?

Start the test: the resolution is shown on the picture and under About this camera, with the megapixels and the camera’s maximum. Use Resolution to test to try 720p, 1080p or 4K.

Why is the picture mirrored?

The preview is flipped like a mirror because that feels natural, as in video-call apps. Other people — and the photos you take here — see you the right way round. Switch Mirror the preview off to see that view.

Why is my frame rate low?

In dim light a webcam lengthens its exposure and delivers fewer frames. Add light in front of you. A slow USB hub or a high resolution on an old computer can also hold it back.

Can I test my phone’s camera?

Yes. Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, start the test, and switch between the front and back cameras in the Camera list.

Is the video recorded or uploaded?

No. The picture goes from the camera to your screen inside the browser. A photo or clip you make stays in this tab until you close it, unless you download it.

Does this test the microphone too?

No — clips recorded here are picture only. Use the Mic Tester for sound.
