WebP Converter

Turn PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, AVIF and HEIC images into WebP — usually a quarter to a third smaller with the same look. Choose lossy or pixel-perfect lossless, convert a whole batch, and keep everything on your device.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Converts PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF (first frame), BMP, AVIF and HEIC images to WebP.
  • Lossy WebP with a quality slider (1–100), or lossless WebP that keeps every pixel identical to the original.
  • Transparency (alpha) is preserved in both modes.
  • Uses the browser’s own WebP encoder where available and Google’s libwebp compiled to WebAssembly for lossless mode and for Safari.
  • Google reports lossy WebP files are typically 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs, and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG.
  • Convert any number of images at once and download them individually or as a ZIP.
  • Runs entirely in your browser: images are never uploaded, and metadata such as GPS location is not copied.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Lossy or lossless

Lossy for photos with the smallest files; lossless for logos, screenshots and graphics where every pixel must stay exact.

Works in every browser

Chrome, Edge and Firefox use their built-in encoder; Safari and lossless mode use libwebp in WebAssembly, so results are consistent everywhere.

Transparency kept

PNG and GIF transparency carries over to WebP — no white boxes behind your logos.

HEIC input too

Drop iPhone HEIC photos straight in; they are decoded in your browser and saved as WebP.

See the savings

Each file shows its size before and after, and the batch total, so you know exactly what you gained.

Batch and ZIP

Convert a whole folder of images in one go and download them as a single ZIP file.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format created by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. The same picture is usually noticeably smaller as WebP than as JPG or PNG, which makes web pages load faster.

Every current browser displays WebP — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari on macOS Big Sur and iOS 14 or later — as do Android, Windows 10/11, macOS and most image editors.

When not to use WebP

  • Email attachments and documents — some email clients and older Office versions still handle JPG and PNG more reliably.
  • Printing — print shops usually expect JPG, PNG, TIFF or PDF.
  • Very old software — Windows 7 photo viewers and old editors may not open WebP.
  • Animated GIFs — this tool converts the first frame only, into a still image.

Using WebP on your website

Serve WebP to every visitor today — all modern browsers support it. If you must support very old browsers, use a <picture> element with a WebP <source> and a JPG <img> fallback. Converting your largest images to WebP is one of the quickest ways to improve Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), a Core Web Vitals metric.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this WebP converter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of images.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

Will converting to WebP reduce quality?

Lossy WebP at quality 75–85 looks the same as the original to most people. Choose Lossless if the pixels must stay exactly identical.

Why is my WebP bigger than the original?

This happens with images that were already heavily compressed, or tiny graphics. Lower the quality, or keep the original format for that file.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, in both lossy and lossless mode. Transparent PNGs and GIFs keep their transparency when converted.

Can I convert HEIC photos to WebP?

Yes. HEIC photos from an iPhone are decoded in your browser and saved as WebP. To get JPG instead, use the HEIC to JPG Converter.

Does it keep GIF animation?

No — animated GIFs are converted to a still WebP of the first frame.

Does it work in Safari and on iPhone?

Yes. Safari can’t write WebP on its own, so the tool uses Google’s libwebp encoder in WebAssembly there. It is a little slower but produces the same kind of file.
