Minesweeper
The classic mine-clearing puzzle — with a safe first click, boards you can solve without guessing, hints that explain the logic, chording, and your best times and 3BV/s.
At a glance
- Three classic levels — Beginner (9×9, 10 mines), Intermediate (16×16, 40) and Expert (30×16, 99) — plus custom boards up to 40×30.
- The first click is always safe and opens a clearing; mines are placed only after it.
- No-guess boards: each board is checked by a logic solver so it can be cleared without a single 50/50 guess.
- Hints show the next safe cell or certain mine and explain why — and point out a wrong flag first.
- Right-click or long-press to flag, click a number to open around it (chording), question marks optional, full keyboard control.
- Tracks wins, best times and 3BV/s for each level in your browser; your game is saved if you close the tab.
Step by step
How to play Minesweeper
- 1
Click any cell
The first click is always safe and opens an area of the board.
- 2
Read the numbers
A number shows how many mines touch that cell, including diagonally.
- 3
Flag the mines
Right-click (or long-press) a cell you know is a mine to put a flag on it.
- 4
Clear the rest
Open every cell that isn’t a mine to win. Click a number whose mines are all flagged to open around it.

Minesweeper patterns worth knowing
| Pattern | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| A 1 with one hidden neighbour | That neighbour is a mine. |
| A number with all its mines flagged | Every other neighbour is safe — click the number to open them. |
| 1-1 along a wall | The cell beyond the second 1 is safe. |
| 1-2-1 along a wall | The mines are under the 1s; the cell under the 2 is safe. |
| 1-2-2-1 along a wall | The mines are under the two 2s. |
What is 3BV?
3BV (Bechtel’s Board Benchmark Value) is the smallest number of clicks that can clear a board: one click per open area plus one per number not on the edge of an open area. Dividing it by your time gives 3BV/s, the fairest way to compare speed across boards.
