At a glance

  • Calculates PPF maturity and interest the way the scheme works: interest on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, credited once a year.
  • ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to ₹40,68,209 — ₹22.5 lakh deposited and ₹18.18 lakh of tax-free interest.
  • Handles yearly deposits (by 5 April) and monthly deposits (by the 5th): ₹12,500 a month gives about ₹39.45 lakh, a little less because later instalments earn for fewer months.
  • Models extensions in 5-year blocks to 20, 25 or 30 years, with or without further deposits — 25 years of full deposits crosses ₹1.03 crore.
  • Applies the scheme limits (₹500 to ₹1,50,000 a year) and has a goal mode for the deposit needed to reach a target.
  • Year-by-year chart and statement, downloadable as CSV. The rate is editable, because the government reviews it every quarter.

PPF rules in brief

  • Deposit: at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in one go or in instalments.
  • Interest: set by the government each quarter (7.1% since April 2020), calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month end, and credited on 31 March.
  • Term: the account matures 15 full financial years after the year it is opened, and can be extended 5 years at a time.
  • Tax: deposits qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
  • Access: loans from the 3rd to the 6th financial year; one partial withdrawal a year from the 7th.

Why the 5th of the month matters

Interest for a month is paid on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day. Money deposited on or before the 5th counts for that month; money deposited on the 6th earns nothing until the next month. Depositing the whole year’s amount by 5 April earns interest for all twelve months, which is why a yearly lump sum beats twelve instalments.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much will I get from PPF after 15 years?

With the maximum ₹1,50,000 a year at 7.1%, ₹40,68,209. With ₹5,000 a month, about ₹15.78 lakh. Enter your own deposit to see your figure.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

It has been 7.1% a year since April 2020. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter, so check the latest announcement and change the rate in the calculator if it has moved.

Is it better to deposit yearly or monthly?

A single deposit by 5 April earns the most, because the whole amount earns interest for the full year. Monthly deposits are easier on cash flow and give slightly less — about ₹1.24 lakh less over 15 years on the maximum deposit.

Can I continue PPF after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, either with fresh deposits or without. Pick 20, 25 or 30 years and use the switch to compare both ways.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free, which makes 7.1% from PPF worth more than the same rate from a fixed deposit for most taxpayers.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
