GPA & CGPA Calculator
Work out your semester SGPA and overall CGPA from credits and grades, convert CGPA to percentage with the formula your university uses, and see what you must score to reach a target.
At a glance
- Calculates SGPA (semester GPA) from each course’s credits and grade: Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits, rounded to two decimals.
- Calculates CGPA across semesters — credit-weighted when you enter credits — and reproduces the worked examples in the UGC’s credit-system guidelines.
- Supports the UGC 10-point scale (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0), the US 4.0 scale with Honors and AP weighting, and a 5-point scale — or type grade points directly.
- Converts CGPA to percentage and back with the formula your university uses: CGPA × 9.5, CGPA × 10, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, 7.1 × CGPA + 11, or your own.
- An 8.2 CGPA is 77.9% with CGPA × 9.5, 82% with CGPA × 10 and 74.5% with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
- Target planner: the average SGPA you need in the remaining semesters to reach a goal CGPA, and the highest CGPA still possible.

Step by step
How to calculate SGPA and CGPA
- 1
Pick your grading scale
Choose the 10-point scale used in India, the US 4.0 scale or a 5-point scale.
- 2
Enter your courses
For each course type the credits and choose the grade. If your university uses different letters, switch to Grade points and type the number from your marksheet.
- 3
Read your SGPA
The SGPA appears with the total credits and credit points. Tap Add to CGPA to carry it over as a semester.
- 4
Get your CGPA
On the CGPA tab enter the SGPA and credits of every semester to get your cumulative figure.
- 5
Convert or plan
Use CGPA to % with your university’s formula, or Target to see what you need in the semesters left.

SGPA and CGPA formulas
SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits for the courses of one semester. Each course’s grade points are multiplied by its credits, so a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.
CGPA = Σ(semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ credits over all semesters so far. The UGC’s own illustration: six semesters of 20, 20, 26, 26, 24 and 24 credits with SGPAs of 6.9, 6.7, 9.15, 7.38, 7.75 and 8.0 give (20 × 6.9 + 20 × 6.7 + 26 × 9.15 + 26 × 7.38 + 24 × 7.75 + 24 × 8.0) ÷ 140 = 7.71.
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade points | Credit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | O | 10 | 40 |
| Physics | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Programming | 3 | A | 8 | 24 |
| English | 2 | B+ | 7 | 14 |
| Physics lab | 2 | O | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 15 | 134 → SGPA 8.93 |
UGC 10-point grading scale
The letter grades and grade points the University Grants Commission recommends for the choice-based credit system. Universities set their own marks ranges for each grade.
| Letter grade | Grade points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Above average |
| C | 5 | Average |
| P | 4 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
| Ab | 0 | Absent |
CGPA to percentage formulas
There is no single national rule: each board and university publishes its own conversion, and some change it between schemes — KTU, for example, moved from 10 × CGPA − 2.5 to CGPA × 10 in 2023. The table shows the formulas commonly reported. Use the one printed on your marksheet or in your university’s circular; that is what employers and admission offices accept.
| Formula | Commonly used by | 8.2 CGPA becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE (Class 10 CGPA), Delhi University | 77.9% |
| CGPA × 10 | Anna University, KTU and many others | 82% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | VTU, AKTU, MAKAUT | 74.5% |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | GTU, JNTU Hyderabad | 77% |
| 7.1 × CGPA + 11 | Mumbai University | 69.22% |
| 7.25 × CGPA + 11 | Mumbai University | 70.45% |
US GPA on the 4.0 scale
An A is 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7 and F 0. GPA is the credit-weighted average, exactly like SGPA.
A weighted GPA adds 0.5 for an Honors course and 1.0 for an AP or IB course, so it can go above 4.0. Colleges usually look at both. Schools differ on the details — some count A+ as 4.3 — so check your school’s handbook.
SGPA, CGPA and GPA — what is the difference?
- SGPA (semester grade point average) covers the courses of one semester.
- CGPA (cumulative grade point average) covers every semester completed so far.
- GPA is the general term, and the one used in the US; a semester GPA is the same idea as an SGPA.
- Some universities call the same figures SPI and CPI, or GPA and CGPI.
Converting an Indian CGPA to a 4.0 GPA
There is no official conversion. Dividing by 10 and multiplying by 4 gives a rough figure — an 8.0 CGPA is about 3.2 — but US universities and credential evaluators such as WES convert course by course from your marks, so their figure can differ a good deal. When applying abroad, report your CGPA on its own scale unless the form asks otherwise.
