At a glance

  • Adds GST to a price or removes GST from a price that already includes it, at the current slabs of 5%, 18% and 40% — plus 0%, 0.25%, 1.5% and 3%, and the old 12% and 28% for earlier bills.
  • Splits the tax into CGST + SGST for a sale within one state, or IGST for a sale to another state.
  • ₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹11,800 (CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900). Taking 18% GST out of ₹10,000 leaves ₹8,474.58 before tax and ₹1,525.42 of GST.
  • Totals a bill with several items at different rates, with a rate-wise summary of taxable value, CGST, SGST or IGST, and round-off — downloadable as CSV.
  • Works out the GST payable after input tax credit: the tax on a sale less the tax already paid on the purchase.
  • Has a GST rate finder for over 90 everyday goods and services, with the rates in force since 22 September 2025 (and tobacco at 40% since 1 February 2026).
  • Shows the working and the amount in words. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

GST calculation formulas

To add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + GST. For ₹10,000 at 18%: GST = 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800, so the total is ₹11,800.

To remove GST (reverse calculation): value before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and GST = total − value. For a ₹11,800 bill at 18%: 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, so the GST inside it is ₹1,800.

Do not simply take the percentage off the total. 18% of ₹11,800 is ₹2,124 — too much, because GST is charged on the value before tax, not on the total.

GST rates in 2026

Since 22 September 2025 GST has two main slabs, a merit rate of 5% and a standard rate of 18%, and a 40% rate for a short list of luxury and sin goods. The 12% and 28% slabs were abolished.

How much of an inclusive price is GST?

When a price already includes GST, the tax is a smaller share of it than the rate suggests. Divide the price by the number in the last column to get the value before tax.

CGST, SGST and IGST

  • CGST (central GST) and SGST (state GST) apply together to a sale within one state. Each is half the rate: 18% GST is 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • UTGST replaces SGST in union territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh and Ladakh.
  • IGST (integrated GST) applies to a sale from one state to another, and to imports. It is the full rate as one tax: 18% IGST.
  • The total tax is the same either way — only where the money goes differs.

What changed with GST 2.0

The GST Council’s 56th meeting on 3 September 2025 replaced the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% with 5% and 18%, plus 40% for a few goods. Most 12% items moved to 5%, and most 28% items — air conditioners, large TVs, cement, small cars, motorcycles up to 350 cc — moved to 18%. The new rates apply from 22 September 2025.

The compensation cess on cars, aerated drinks and coal ended on the same day, which is why larger cars are now a flat 40% instead of 28% plus cess. Cigarettes, pan masala and other tobacco products moved to 40% on 1 February 2026, charged on the printed retail price, with a separate excise duty or health cess on top.

Input tax credit

A GST-registered business does not pay the whole GST it collects. It deducts the GST it paid on its own purchases — the input tax credit — and pays the difference. Buy goods for ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 GST and sell them for ₹12,000 + ₹2,160 GST: the tax to pay is 2,160 − 1,800 = ₹360, which is 18% of the ₹2,000 of value added.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹5,000 at 18%: 5,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹900 of GST, so the total is ₹5,900. Within a state that is ₹450 CGST + ₹450 SGST.

How do I remove GST from a total?

Divide the total by 1 + the rate: by 1.05 for 5%, 1.18 for 18%, 1.40 for 40%. A ₹5,900 bill at 18% is 5,900 ÷ 1.18 = ₹5,000 before GST, with ₹900 of tax. Choose Remove GST above to do it automatically.

What are the GST rates in 2026?

The main slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% on a short list of luxury and sin goods. Essentials are nil-rated, gold and silver are 3%, and diamonds 0.25% or 1.5%. The 12% and 28% slabs ended on 22 September 2025.

Is 12% or 28% GST still charged?

Not on new sales. Those slabs were abolished on 22 September 2025 — tobacco products stayed at 28% plus cess until 1 February 2026 and are now 40%. Both rates are still offered here so you can check older invoices.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

CGST and SGST are charged together, half the rate each, when buyer and seller are in the same state. IGST is charged alone, at the full rate, when they are in different states or the goods are imported.

What is the GST on mobile phones, gold and cars?

Mobile phones are 18%. Gold and silver jewellery is 3%, with 5% on making charges. Small cars are 18%; larger cars and SUVs are 40%; electric vehicles are 5%. Search the rate finder above for other items.

How is GST rounded?

Each tax is rounded to the nearest paisa, and CGST and SGST are always equal — so when GST is taken out of a price within a state, the value before tax can sit one paisa below price ÷ (1 + rate). Many businesses then round the bill total to the nearest rupee: switch on Round off the total in the bill section.
