At a glance

  • Builds a janam kundli from the date, time and place of birth: Lagna (D1), Chandra and Navamsa (D9) charts in North Indian or South Indian style.
  • Uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the official Indian standard — and whole-sign houses; Rahu and Ketu by true or mean node.
  • Planet positions are accurate to about an arc-minute: checked against the published chart of 15 August 1947 (lagna Vrishabha 7°46′, Moon in Pushya).
  • Gives each graha’s rashi, degree, nakshatra and pada, house and navamsa, with retrograde grahas marked, plus the birth panchang — tithi, vara, yoga, karana, sunrise and sunset.
  • Vimshottari dasha with every mahadasha and antardasha date, the avakahada details (name letter, gana, nadi, yoni, varna) and a Mangal dosha check from the lagna and the Moon.
  • In English or Hindi, printable or saved as a PDF, with each chart downloadable as an image. Birth details stay on your device — nothing is uploaded.

What a kundli shows

A kundli (janam patrika, or Vedic birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment of birth, as seen from the place of birth. The lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon; it becomes the first house, and the other eleven houses follow in order. The nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — are placed in the signs they occupy.

Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars. It differs from the Western (tropical) zodiac by the ayanamsa, about 24° today, which is why your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than your Western one.

Reading the charts

  • North Indian chart: the houses never move — the first house is the top-centre diamond and they run anticlockwise. The number in each house is the sign (1 = Mesha … 12 = Meena).
  • South Indian chart: the signs never move — Meena is the top-left box and they run clockwise. The lagna is marked with a diagonal line.
  • Chandra kundli: the same planets counted from the Moon’s sign as the first house.
  • Navamsa (D9): each sign divided into nine parts of 3°20′; widely used for marriage and the strength of planets.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this kundli maker free?

Yes. Charts, dasha, panchang, printing and image downloads are all free, with no sign-up.

How accurate is the kundli?

Planet positions are accurate to about one arc-minute and use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in Indian panchangs. The lagna depends on the birth time: it moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time that is off by ten minutes shifts it by about 2.5°.

What if I don’t know my exact birth time?

The Moon’s sign (rashi) and nakshatra usually stay the same for many hours, so they are often still right. The lagna and the houses need the correct time — an approximate time gives an approximate lagna.

What is the difference between rashi and lagna?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth; your lagna is the sign rising in the east at that moment. The rashi changes about every 2¼ days, the lagna about every two hours.

My town is not in the list. What should I do?

Switch on Enter coordinates myself and type the latitude, longitude and time zone (5.5 for India). You can find the coordinates in any maps app. A nearby city in the list also gives an almost identical chart.

Does this tool predict my future?

No. It calculates the chart and the dasha dates that astrologers work from. Interpretation is a matter of tradition and belief, and is left to you or your astrologer.

Are my birth details stored?

Only on your own device, so the form is filled in when you return. Nothing is sent to a server; press Clear to remove it.
