How net salary is calculated in Luxembourg

Three things come off a gross salary: social contributions, income tax withheld by the employer, and dependency insurance. Tax credits are then added back. Take €5,000 gross a month in class 1:

Health insurance is 3.05% (€152.50) and pension insurance 8.5% (€425.00). Both are deductible, so tax is worked out on 5,000 − 152.50 − 425.00 = €4,422.50, rounded down to €4,420. The class 1 formula for that bracket is 38% × 4,420 − 1,006.85 = €672.70, plus the 7% employment-fund surcharge: €719.70.

Dependency insurance is 1.4% of the gross above a quarter of the minimum wage: 1.4% × (5,000 − 692.83) = €60.30. Finally the CIS (€25.00) and CI-CO2 (€9.00) tax credits are added. Net: 5,000 − 152.50 − 425.00 − 719.70 − 60.30 + 34.00 = €3,676.50.

Tax classes 1, 1a and 2

  • Class 1 — single people without a child in the household.
  • Class 1a — single parents with a child in the household, widowed people, and anyone aged 64 or over on 1 January. Tax starts at a higher salary than in class 1, then rises faster.
  • Class 2 — married couples taxed jointly, and for three years after being widowed, divorced or separated. The scale is applied to half the income and doubled, which is why class 2 pays far less at the same salary.
  • Registered partners are withheld in their own class during the year and can ask for joint taxation in their tax return.
  • Married non-residents are in class 1 unless they ask to be treated as residents; their card then shows a withholding rate instead of a class.

Tax credits on the payslip

  • CIS (crédit d’impôt pour salariés) — €600 a year for a gross salary between €11,266 and €40,000, less above, nothing from €80,000.
  • CI-CO2 — €216 a year in 2026 up to €40,000 gross, tapering to nothing at €80,000. It offsets the CO2 tax.
  • CISSM (minimum-wage credit) — €81 a month for a full-time gross of €1,800 to €3,000, tapering to nothing at €3,600; prorated for part-time work.
  • CIM (single-parent credit) — €3,504 a year below €60,000 of taxable income, falling to €750 from €105,000. Class 1a only, on request.

What is not included

  • Benefits in kind such as a company car, meal vouchers or housing, and the tax relief on overtime.
  • A withholding rate printed on the tax card — a spouse’s second card, or a non-resident treated as a resident.
  • The profit-sharing bonus and impatriate regimes, and deductions you claim only in a tax return.
  • Maintenance payments, which reduce the single-parent credit.
  • This is an estimate for information. Your payslip and the tax office’s assessment are what count.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is €5,000 gross net in Luxembourg?

In 2026, €5,000 gross a month is €3,676.50 net in tax class 1, €3,885.30 in class 1a and €4,155.80 in class 2 — before any travel allowance, which adds a little more.

What is the minimum wage in Luxembourg in 2026?

From 1 June 2026 the minimum social wage is €2,771.33 gross a month for an unskilled worker aged 18 or over and €3,325.60 for a skilled worker (full time, index 992.24). The unskilled minimum is about €2,418 net in class 1, helped by the €81 minimum-wage tax credit.

Which tax class am I in?

Class 1 if you are single without children; class 1a if you are a single parent, widowed, or 64 or over on 1 January; class 2 if you are married and taxed jointly. It is printed on the tax card your employer receives from the tax administration.

How is a 13th month taxed?

It is ordinary salary: it pays pension, dependency and 2.8% health insurance, and is taxed at your top rate because it comes on top of the year’s other pay. On €5,000 a month in class 1 you keep about €2,423 of a €5,000 13th month.

Does this work for cross-border workers?

Yes for the Luxembourg payslip: frontaliers pay the same contributions and the same withholding tax on salary earned in Luxembourg. Days worked from home beyond the treaty limit (34 a year for Belgium, France and Germany) are taxed in your country of residence instead, which this calculator does not model.

Is the pension contribution 8% or 8.5%?

It is 8.5% for the employee and 8.5% for the employer since 1 January 2026. It was 8% each until the end of 2025.

Why is my real payslip a little different?

Usually because of benefits in kind, overtime, a different travel allowance or extra deductions on your tax card, or because the month had back pay or a bonus. Enter the distance and deductions from your card to get closer.

Is my salary stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.
