Online Notepad

A fast, private notepad in your browser: write, and every word is saved on this device as you type. Keep many notes, search them, find and replace, open and save text files – no account needed.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Saves as you type into your browser’s own storage (IndexedDB) – no account and no upload. Open the page again on the same device and your notes are there.
  • Keep any number of notes: search across titles and text, pin the important ones, and get deleted notes back from the trash for 30 days.
  • Find and replace with match case, whole words and regular expressions (with $1 groups); every match is highlighted in the text.
  • Open text files in UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252. In Chrome and Edge, Ctrl+S saves back to the same file; other browsers download a .txt or .md file.
  • Share a note as a link: the text is compressed into the part of the link after #, which browsers never send to a web server.
  • Notepad habits kept: F5 types the time and date, a first line of .LOG adds a time stamp each time the note is opened, Tab types a tab, plus word wrap, font and size.
  • Notes stay in step across open tabs. Back up everything as one JSON file, or download all notes as a ZIP of .txt files.

Step by step

How to use the online notepad

  1. 1

    Start writing

Type in the editor. The first line becomes the note’s title unless you give it one.

  2. 2

    Add more notes

Press New (or Alt+N). Your notes are listed on the left – on a phone, under Notes – newest first.

  3. 3

    Find things

Search the list to find a note, or press Ctrl+F to find (and Ctrl+H to replace) inside the one you are reading.

  4. 4

    Open and save files

Use Open for a text file and Save (Ctrl+S) to write it to a file. More options are in the ⋯ menu.

  5. 5

    Keep a backup

Now and then, choose Back up everything in the menu; Restore or import brings the notes back.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Nothing to lose

There is no Save button to forget: each change is stored within a moment, and again when you close the tab or switch away.

Private by design

Your notes are written to this browser only. There is no account, no server copy and no tracking of what you write.

Proper find and replace

Highlights every match, steps through them with Enter, and replaces one or all – with regular expressions for the tricky jobs.

Works with your files

Open .txt, .md, .csv, .log or code files, edit them, and save them back where they came from (Chrome and Edge) or download a copy.

Focus mode

Hide everything but the page for distraction-free writing, in the font and size you like.

Yours to take away

Back up all notes in one file and restore them on another computer or browser, or send a single note as a link.

Where are my notes kept?

In your browser, on this device: the notes go into IndexedDB, the browser’s built-in database for websites. They survive closing the tab and restarting the computer, and no one else can read them – including JustTools.

They are removed if you clear this site’s data or browsing history, and a private window forgets them when it closes. Browsers can also clear storage of sites you have not used for a long time when disk space runs low; Protect notes from clean-up in the menu asks the browser not to. For anything important, keep a backup file.

Sharing a note by link

Share link copies a link with the note inside it, compressed after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part of a link to the web server, so the note is not stored anywhere – it exists only in the link and wherever you paste it. Whoever opens the link sees the note and can save a copy to their own notes.

Anyone with the link can read the note, so share it the way you would share the text itself. Very long notes make very long links, which some chat apps cut short; send a file instead.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this online notepad private?

Yes. Notes are saved in your browser on this device and never sent to JustTools or anyone else. The only way a note leaves your device is if you download it, save it to a file, or copy a share link yourself.

Will my notes still be here tomorrow?

Yes, on the same device and browser, unless you clear this site’s data or use a private window. For safety, use Protect notes from clean-up and keep a backup with Back up everything.

How do I move my notes to another computer?

Choose Back up everything (.json) in the menu, copy the file to the other computer, open this page there and choose Restore or import…. Notes that already exist are kept unless the backup has a newer version.

Can I edit a .txt file and save it back?

Yes. Press Open (Ctrl+O) and choose the file. In Chrome and Edge, Save (Ctrl+S) writes your changes back to that same file after you allow it once. Firefox and Safari do not let websites write to files, so Save downloads a copy instead.

What does .LOG do?

It is a trick from Windows Notepad: if the first line of a note is exactly .LOG, the time and date are added at the end each time you open the note – handy for a diary or a work log. F5 types the time and date at the cursor.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, writing, saving and searching need no connection, because everything happens in your browser.

Can I format text or use Markdown?

This is a plain-text notepad, which keeps it fast and its files universal. You can write Markdown and download it as .md, or see it formatted in the Markdown Previewer.
