What changed in 2026

The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. It speaks of a single “tax year” instead of the previous year and assessment year, and renumbers the sections – the 87A rebate, for example, is now section 156 – but Budget 2026 kept the rates, the ₹12 lakh rebate limit and the ₹75,000 standard deduction.

Under the new Income-tax Rules, 2026, HRA in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad is worked out at 50% of salary, like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. For FY 2025-26 those four cities stay at 40%.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?

In the new regime, yes: if your taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, the rebate wipes out the tax. For salaried people, the ₹75,000 standard deduction makes a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free. The rebate does not apply to income taxed at special rates, such as capital gains on shares.

Which tax regime is better for me?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates but few deductions; the old one rewards large claims such as HRA, 80C, 80D and home-loan interest. Enter your figures and the calculator shows both totals, the cheaper regime and how much more you would need to claim for the old one to win.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

It is the least of three amounts: the HRA you receive; the rent you pay minus 10% of basic pay and DA; and 50% of basic and DA in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai – plus Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad from 2026-27 – or 40% elsewhere. It is available only in the old regime.

Can I switch between the old and new regimes?

If you have no business income, you can choose either regime every year when you file your return. Tell your employer your choice so that TDS is deducted correctly; the new regime applies if you do not.

What is marginal relief?

It stops a small rise in income from causing a bigger rise in tax. Just above ₹12 lakh in the new regime, your tax cannot be more than the income above ₹12 lakh. The same idea applies at the surcharge thresholds of ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore, ₹2 crore and ₹5 crore.

Does this calculator include capital gains?

No. It covers salary, pension, house property, interest and other income taxed at slab rates for resident individuals. Gains on shares and mutual funds are taxed at special rates with their own rules, so add them separately or ask a tax professional.
