At a glance

  • Turn over two cards each turn. A pair stays face up; if they don’t match, they turn back — remember where they were.
  • Grids from 6 pairs (12 cards) for small children up to 18 pairs (36 cards) for a real workout.
  • 11 card sets: animals, food, travel, nature, shapes and colours, numbers, letters — and learning sets that pair A with a, 3 + 4 with 7, or a picture with its word, plus Hindi letters.
  • Play on your own against the clock (with stars and your best scores), against the computer with a forgetful, good or sharp memory, or with 2 to 4 friends.
  • An optional peek shows every card for 3 seconds at the start — a gentle start for younger players.
  • Memory (also called Concentration or Pairs) is a classic card game you can also play with an ordinary pack of cards. Free, no sign-up.

Step by step

How to play the memory game

  3. 3

    Keep the pairs

Memory game tips

  • Work in order: turn over cards row by row, so you remember positions more easily.
  • Say what you see — “cat, top left” — saying it in your head helps you remember.
  • Turn a known card second: if your first card matches one you have seen, go straight to it.
  • Learn something new: when you turn an unknown card first and it doesn’t match anything you remember, use your second turn to uncover another new card.
  • Playing alone, three stars means about one and a half turns per pair or fewer.

About the memory game

Memory — also known as Concentration, Pairs or Pelmanism — is played with cards laid face down. Players turn over two at a time looking for matches, so it rewards attention and short-term memory. It is a favourite with teachers because the same game can practise letters, numbers, sums and new words.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you play the memory game?

Turn over two cards. If they match, they stay up and you go again; if not, they turn back. Find all the pairs — alone in as few turns as possible, or more pairs than the other players.

Is there a memory game for kids?

Yes. Choose 6 or 8 pairs, a picture set such as Animals, and switch on Show all cards for 3 seconds. The learning sets practise letters, sums and reading.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes. Choose Computer and how good its memory is: forgetful, good or sharp.

Can several people play?

Yes — choose Friends for 2 to 4 players on one device. Finding a pair gives you another turn.

How are the stars worked out?
