Image to Text (OCR)

Turn a photo, screenshot or scan into text you can copy and edit — in English, Hindi and 30 more languages, without uploading anything.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Reads the text in any image — photos of notes and books, screenshots, scanned pages, receipts, posters — and gives you text to copy, edit or download.
  • 32 languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Urdu, Sanskrit, plus Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French and more. Mix up to three, such as Hindi + English.
  • Several images at once — drop them in, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl + V. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos all work.
  • Marks unsure words on the image, shows a confidence score, and can join wrapped lines into paragraphs and mend words split by a hyphen.
  • Enlarges small text and straightens tilted photos before reading, for better results.
  • Uses the open-source Tesseract OCR engine running in your browser — the image is never uploaded. Only the language file (about 1–3 MB) is downloaded, once.

Tips for the best results

  • Choose the right language — Hindi text read as English comes out as nonsense.
  • Sharp and straight: hold the phone parallel to the page, in good light, without shadows.
  • Crop to the text — a page full of pictures or tables confuses the reader.
  • For screenshots, posters and signs, choose Scattered text under Reading options.
  • Handwriting is hard for any OCR; neat print works best.

What is OCR?

OCR (optical character recognition) turns pictures of letters into real, editable text. This tool uses Tesseract, a free OCR engine first developed at Hewlett-Packard and later maintained with Google’s support, with its neural-network (LSTM) models. It runs here as WebAssembly inside your browser, so your images don’t go to any server.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from an image?

Choose the language, then drop the image on the box (or paste it with Ctrl + V). The text appears in a few seconds, ready to copy or download.

Does it work with Hindi?

Yes. Choose Hindi — or Hindi and English together for mixed text. Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi and other Indian languages work too.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The text is read by an OCR engine running in your browser. Only the language file is downloaded (from the jsDelivr CDN) the first time you use a language.

Can it read handwriting?

Only very neat handwriting, and not reliably. It is designed for printed and typed text.

Why are some words wrong?

Blurry, small, curved or low-contrast text is hard to read. Use a sharper photo, keep Enlarge small text on, and check the words highlighted in orange.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes — add up to 20 at a time, then copy them all or download them as one .txt file.
