Text Compare

Paste two versions and see exactly what changed — line by line, word by word or letter by letter.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Shows added, removed and changed lines — and inside a changed line, the exact words that differ.
  • View the result side by side or inline, or compare word by word or character by character for prose and short strings.
  • Long files stay readable: unchanged stretches fold away, and next / previous change buttons jump between differences.
  • Ignore case and ignore spaces to see only the changes that matter.
  • Works with any language — Hindi and other scripts included — and with code, CSV, JSON and logs. Open files straight from your device.
  • Download or copy a standard unified diff (.diff) that git and patch understand. Your text never leaves your browser.

Step by step

How to compare two texts

  1. 1

    Paste the original

Paste or type the first version on the left, or open a file.

  2. 2

    Paste the changed version

Paste the second version on the right.

  3. 3

    Read the differences

Red shows what was removed, green what was added, and highlighted words what changed inside a line.

  4. 4

    Adjust and export

Ignore case or spaces, switch views, and copy or download the differences as a .diff file.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Line, word or character

Pick the level of detail that suits code, documents or single words.

Changed words highlighted

Edits within a line are marked, not just the whole line.

Side by side or inline

Two columns on a wide screen, one on a phone.

Fold unchanged lines

Only the changes and a few lines around them.

Smart matching

The same algorithms git uses: patience and Myers diff.

Private

Nothing is uploaded; large files compare in a moment.

Reading the result

You seeIt means
Red line (−)The line is only in the original — it was removed.
Green line (+)The line is only in the changed text — it was added.
Red and green line side by sideThe line was changed; the highlighted words are the edits.
“Show 12 unchanged lines”Identical lines folded away — click to show them.

Lines, words or characters?

Lines suits code, lists, CSV and most documents: each line is matched as a whole, then the changed words inside are highlighted. Words suits paragraphs of prose, where one edit can reflow a whole line. Characters suits short strings such as IDs, URLs, passwords or spelling, where a single letter matters.

How the comparison works

The texts are split into lines (or words, or characters), and the smallest set of additions and removals that turns one into the other is found with Eugene Myers’ diff algorithm. For long files, lines that appear exactly once in both versions are matched first — the “patience” method used by git — which keeps moved blocks and repeated lines like “}” from producing confusing results.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the difference between two texts?

Paste the original on the left and the new version on the right. The differences appear immediately: removed lines in red, added lines in green and changed words highlighted.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so it is safe for contracts, code and personal documents. The text is not saved; only your view settings are remembered.

Can I compare code?

Yes. Line mode with side-by-side view works like a code review, and you can download a unified .diff file to apply with git apply or patch.

Can I compare Word or PDF files?

Copy the text out of the document and paste it here. For PDFs, the Compare PDF tool compares two PDF files page by page.

How do I ignore differences in spacing or capital letters?

Turn on Ignore spaces (extra spaces, tabs and trailing spaces) or Ignore case (capital and small letters are treated as the same).

How large can the texts be?

Files of tens of thousands of lines compare in about a second. Character-by-character comparison switches to words for very long texts.
