Hex to ASCII Converter

Paste hex in any format and read it as text — or turn text into hex with the separator and prefix you need. Every character’s bytes, a hex dump and Base64 come along.

Runs in your browser Free · no sign-up

At a glance

  • Converts hex to text and text to hex live, with text read as UTF-8, Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1) or 7-bit ASCII — Hindi, ₹ and emoji round-trip in UTF-8.
  • Reads hex however it’s written: 48 65 6C, 48656c, 0x48,0x65, \x48\x65, %48%65, 48:65:6c or 48h 65h.
  • Anything that isn’t a valid byte is listed with its position and skipped, instead of silently breaking the result.
  • Text → hex output can use spaces, commas, new lines or no separator, 0x or \x prefixes, and upper- or lowercase digits.
  • Shows each character’s code point and bytes, a classic hex dump (offset, bytes, ASCII) and the same bytes in binary, decimal, octal and Base64.
  • Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you paste or open is uploaded.

Step by step

How to convert hex to ASCII text

  1. 1

    Choose the direction

Pick Hex → Text to decode, or Text → Hex to encode.

  2. 2

    Paste your input

Paste the hex (any format) or type the text. The result appears as you type.

  3. 3

    Check the encoding

Keep UTF-8 for modern data; switch to Latin-1 if accented letters look wrong.

  4. 4

    Copy the result

Copy it, swap it back to check the round trip, or open Hex dump and Characters for detail.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Any hex format

Spaces, colons, commas, 0x, \x, URL-style %XX or one long string — paste it as it is.

UTF-8 aware

Multi-byte characters like नमस्ते, ₹ and 👋 decode correctly, and invalid bytes are pointed out.

Hex dump

See bytes the way a hex editor shows them — offsets, 16 bytes per line and printable characters.

Character table

Every character with its Unicode code point and the exact bytes it takes, in hex and decimal.

Files too

Open any file to see its hex, or download decoded hex back as a file — images and PDFs are recognised.

Decimal and octal

Switch to decimal byte values (72 101 108…) or octal, both ways.

How hex becomes text

Computers store text as bytes, and hexadecimal is a compact way to write a byte: two digits from 00 to FF (0 to 255). An encoding maps bytes to characters — in ASCII, 48 is “H”, 65 is “e” and 20 is a space, so 48 65 6C 6C 6F reads “Hello”.

ASCII covers only English letters, digits and symbols (bytes 00–7F). UTF-8 keeps ASCII as it is and uses 2–4 bytes for everything else: “₹” is E2 82 B9 and “न” is E0 A4 A8. That’s why one Hindi character can turn into six hex digits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hex to text?

Choose Hex → Text and paste the hex. Spaces, 0x prefixes and separators don’t matter — every pair of digits is read as one byte and decoded as UTF-8 text.

What is the difference between hex to ASCII and hex to UTF-8?

For bytes 00–7F they are identical. Bytes above 7F aren’t ASCII at all; UTF-8 reads them as parts of multi-byte characters (Hindi, ₹, emoji), while Latin-1 reads each as one Western European letter such as é.

Why do I see in the result?

Those bytes aren’t valid text in the chosen encoding. Try Latin-1, or the data may not be text at all — the tool recognises common files like PNG and PDF so you can download them.

Why does it say a value has an odd number of digits?

A byte is exactly two hex digits. An unbroken string like 486 can’t be split into whole bytes, so a digit is probably missing or extra.

Can I convert binary or decimal too?

Yes — switch Bytes as to Binary, Decimal or Octal. There’s also a dedicated Binary to Text Converter.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, including files you open.
