Add Page Numbers to PDF

Number the pages of a PDF in seconds — choose the format, position, font and starting number, skip a cover page and preview every page before you download. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

At a glance

  • Formats: 1, Page 1, 1 of 10, Page 1 of 10, – 1 –, Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) or a custom format such as “Exhibit A – {n:4}”.
  • Six positions — top or bottom, left, centre or right — with a Double-sided option that swaps left and right on alternate pages for printed booklets.
  • Start on page skips a cover or index, and First number sets the number printed there; the last page can be left without a number.
  • Fonts: sans (Helvetica), serif (Times) or mono (Courier), regular or bold, any size, colour and distance from the edge.
  • Numbers are added as real text, so the PDF stays sharp and searchable; text in other scripts, such as Hindi, is added as a crisp image.
  • Rotated and mixed-size pages are numbered the right way up, in the same place on every page.
  • Bookmarks, links and form fields are kept. Runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib — the file is never uploaded.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Every common format

Plain numbers, “Page 1 of 10”, dashes or Roman numerals for a preface — or build your own with {n}, {total} and zero-padded {n:4}.

Skip the cover

Start numbering on page 2 or 3 and choose the first number, so a title page and contents don’t throw the count off.

Ready for print

Double-sided mode puts numbers on the outer edge of facing pages, like a printed book or bound report.

See it first

Preview the number on every page — position, size and colour — before anything is saved.

Court and office bundles

Number a bundle, annexure or set of exhibits with a custom label like “Annexure P-{n}” or simple Bates-style numbering such as “DOC-{n:6}”.

Private

Your document stays on your device. No upload, no sign-up and no watermark.

Custom formats

{total} is the last number printed, so it stays correct when you skip a cover or start from a number other than 1.

Tips

Putting a book together? Number the preface in Roman numerals and the main text from 1: split the PDF, number each part, then merge them back together.

Need pages in a different order first? Use the PDF Page Organizer before numbering, so the numbers follow the final order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Open the PDF here, choose a format and position, and click Number pages. It’s free, with no sign-up or watermark, and the file never leaves your device.

Can I start numbering from page 2 or 3?

Yes. Set Start on page to the first page that should have a number, and First number to the number it should show — for example page 3 numbered as 1.

Can I add “Page X of Y”?

Yes. Choose Page 1 of 10 or 1 of 10. Y is the last number printed, so it is right even when you skip pages.

Will the numbers be searchable?

Yes, for English and other Latin-script text — the numbers are real text in a standard PDF font. Labels in scripts such as Hindi are added as a high-resolution image.

Will it work on scanned or rotated pages?

Yes. Numbers are placed on the page as you see it, so landscape, rotated and scanned pages all get them the right way up.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The numbers are added in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your device.
