What employers check on rent receipts

ItemWhy
Tenant and landlord namesThe rent must be paid by you to the owner (paying rent to a parent is allowed if they own the house and declare the income).
Property addressIt should match the address you declare for HRA.
Amount and periodMust match the rent you declare to the employer.
Landlord’s PANRequired when the yearly rent is above ₹1,00,000; if the landlord has none, a declaration from them is needed instead.
Landlord’s signatureProves the rent was received.
Revenue stampFor receipts paid in cash above ₹5,000.

HRA in the new and old tax regimes

The HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. Under the new regime, which is the default, rent receipts don’t reduce your tax — but many employers still collect them during the year. Use the Income Tax Calculator to see which regime saves you more.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are rent receipts made online valid for HRA?

Yes. Employers need the details — names, address, amount, period, the landlord’s PAN where required — and the landlord’s signature. A printed receipt signed by the landlord is accepted the same as a handwritten one.

When is the landlord’s PAN required?

When the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 in the year (about ₹8,334 a month). If the landlord has no PAN, they give you a signed declaration saying so.

Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

Only receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000 need a ₹1 revenue stamp signed across by the landlord. Rent paid by UPI, bank transfer or cheque doesn’t.

Monthly or quarterly receipts?

Both are accepted by most employers. Quarterly receipts mean four signatures a year instead of twelve.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Yes, if the house is owned by them, you really pay the rent (preferably by bank transfer), and they show it as income in their tax return.

Is my information stored?

Only in this browser, so the form is filled in next time. Nothing is uploaded.
