What the Panchang shows

ElementWhat it is
TithiThe lunar day: each 12° the Moon moves ahead of the Sun. 15 in the bright half (Shukla, to Purnima) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna, to Amavasya).
NakshatraWhich of the 27 lunar mansions (13°20′ each) the Moon is in.
YogaOne of 27, from the Sun and Moon longitudes added together.
KaranaHalf a tithi — 11 karanas cycle through the month; Vishti (Bhadra) is avoided.
VaraThe weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise.

Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya

The daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts. Rahu Kaal is the 8th part on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday and 3rd on Saturday — so it moves with sunrise and is not a fixed clock time. Choghadiya divides the day and the night into eight periods each; Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good, Char is neutral (good for travel), and Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why do Panchangs differ by a few minutes?

Almanacs use slightly different methods for sunrise (the Sun’s centre or top edge, refraction) and positions. Differences of a few minutes are normal; this Panchang uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and the top edge of the Sun for sunrise.

What is the difference between purnimanta and amanta months?

Purnimanta months (used in North India) end on the full moon; amanta months (South and West India) end on the new moon. In the Shukla paksha both have the same name; in the Krishna paksha the purnimanta month is one ahead — Diwali falls in Kartika (purnimanta) or Ashwin (amanta).

Which tithi is “today’s” tithi?

Traditionally, the tithi running at sunrise applies to the whole day for most purposes. The Panchang also shows when it ends and which tithi follows.

What should I avoid during Rahu Kaal?

By tradition, starting new work, journeys and purchases. Routine work can continue.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

The 8th of the 15 muhurtas of the day, around local noon, considered auspicious for most work — except on Wednesdays.

Can I see the Panchang for another city or date?

Yes — pick any of 400+ cities in India and abroad, and any date, past or future.
