EPS pension

With at least 10 years of service, the pension from 58 is: pensionable salary (average of the last 60 months, at most ₹15,000) × pensionable service ÷ 70. Service of 20 years or more gets two extra years, and at most 35 years count — so the most this formula gives is ₹7,500 a month. The minimum pension is ₹1,000 a month.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the EPF interest rate?

EPFO declared 8.25% a year for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The rate is set every year, so change it in the calculator when a new rate is announced.

How is EPF interest calculated?

On the balance at the end of each month, at one-twelfth of the yearly rate, and credited to your account once a year. The calculator does the same.

Why does only part of the employer’s share reach my EPF?

8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 — at most ₹1,250 a month — goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme instead. It pays you a pension later rather than building your EPF balance.

Is EPF tax-free?

Contributions qualify for Section 80C in the old regime, and the balance is tax-free on withdrawal after five years of continuous service. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if the employer doesn’t contribute) is taxable.

Should I choose VPF?

VPF earns the EPF rate with the same safety, which beats most fixed deposits, but the money is locked in until you leave or meet withdrawal rules. Keep it within the ₹2.5 lakh limit to keep the interest tax-free.

How do I check my actual EPF balance?

On the EPFO member passbook portal or the UMANG app with your UAN, or by a missed call or SMS to EPFO from your registered mobile number.
