The formula

Price = (weight × rate for the purity) + making charges + wastage + stones + hallmarking, plus 3% GST on the total. For 10 g of 22K gold when 24K is ₹7,000 a gram: the 22K rate is 7,000 × 916 ÷ 999 = ₹6,418.42 a gram, so the gold is worth ₹64,184.18. With 12% making charges (₹7,702.10) and ₹45 hallmarking, the total before GST is ₹71,931.29, and with 3% GST ₹74,089.22.

Gold purity

Hallmarked jewellery carries the BIS mark, the purity (such as 22K916) and a six-character HUID code that you can check in the BIS CARE app.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How are making charges calculated?

Most jewellers charge a percentage of the gold value (often 8–25%), some charge a fixed amount per gram, and some add “wastage” or “value addition” as a percentage of the weight. Choose the method your jeweller uses — the result is the same price.

What is the GST on gold jewellery?

3% on the value of the jewellery including making charges. When you only pay for making (giving your own gold), a job worker charges 5% on the making.

How do I convert the 24K rate to 22K?

Multiply the 24K rate by 916 ÷ 999 (about 0.917). If 24K is ₹7,000 a gram, 22K is about ₹6,418 a gram. Many jewellers quote their own 22K rate — use that directly if you have it.

How much is a tola or a pavan?

A tola is 11.66 g and a pavan (sovereign) is 8 g. Choose the unit next to the weight.

How is old gold valued for exchange?

By its pure-gold content: weight × purity, at today’s rate, minus a deduction for melting and testing (usually 2–10%). Hallmarked gold is easier to value fairly.

Does it show live gold rates?

No — rates vary through the day and between cities. Enter the rate your jeweller or the day’s published rate shows; it’s remembered for next time.
