At a glance

  • Trip cost: fuel for the distance (one way or return), plus tolls and parking, and how much each person pays.
  • Petrol vs diesel vs CNG vs electric: cost per km, per month and per year for the distance you drive, for a car or two-wheeler.
  • Adds the vehicle price and upkeep to show the total cost of owning each over 3 to 10 years.
  • Tells you after how many km a dearer CNG, diesel or electric vehicle pays for itself against petrol.
  • Finds your real mileage with the full-tank method, and uses it in the other calculators.
  • Every price and mileage can be changed — fuel prices differ by city — and your figures are remembered on this device.

Step by step

How to calculate fuel cost

  1. 1

    Enter the distance

One way, and turn on Return trip if you’re coming back.

  2. 2

    Enter mileage and price

Your vehicle’s km per litre (or kg, or kWh) and the fuel price in your city.

  3. 3

    Add tolls and people

Tolls and parking, and how many people share the cost.

  4. 4

    Compare fuels

Switch to Petrol vs CNG vs EV to see running and ownership costs for your monthly driving.

Features

Everything you need, nothing you don’t

Trip cost

Return trips, tolls, split per person.

Four fuels

Petrol, diesel, CNG and electric.

Car or two-wheeler

Typical figures for each.

Cost of owning

Price + fuel + upkeep over the years.

Break-even

When a pricier vehicle pays off.

Real mileage

From two full-tank fill-ups.

The formula

Fuel cost = distance ÷ mileage × fuel price. A 500 km round trip in a car that does 15 km a litre needs 500 ÷ 15 = 33.3 litres; at ₹95 a litre that is about ₹3,167 — ₹6.33 a km. For an EV, use km per kWh and the electricity price: at 6.5 km/kWh and ₹8 a unit, the same trip costs about ₹615.

Petrol, diesel, CNG or electric? (car, 1,000 km a month)

Using example prices of ₹10 lakh (petrol), ₹11.5 lakh (diesel), ₹10.9 lakh (CNG) and ₹14 lakh (electric), with servicing included. Enter the actual prices of the models you’re comparing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate petrol cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your car’s mileage to get the litres needed, then multiply by the price per litre. Add tolls and parking, and divide by the number of people sharing.

Is an electric car cheaper to run than petrol?

Charged at home, usually by far — around ₹1–1.5 a km against ₹6–7 for petrol. But EVs cost more to buy, so the saving takes a few years of regular driving to cover the extra price. Public fast charging costs more.

Is CNG worth it?

For people who drive a lot, often yes: CNG costs about half as much per km as petrol, and the extra price of a CNG car is usually recovered within 30,000 km or so. Boot space is smaller and filling stations fewer.

How do I check my real mileage?

Fill the tank to full and note the odometer. Drive normally; at the next fill-up, fill to full again and note how much went in and the new reading. Mileage = km driven ÷ litres filled.

Why is my mileage lower than the company figure?

Claimed (ARAI) figures come from standard test conditions. City traffic, AC, tyre pressure, load and driving style reduce real-world mileage by 15–30%.

Does the ownership cost include insurance?

No — it adds the vehicle price, fuel and upkeep. Insurance, resale value and an EV battery replacement are left out; they vary too much from model to model.
